Phil will tell us all about his passion for drones in this Ask Task
Hello, my name is Phil. Today they’ve asked me to speak about drones.
The first questions is, how did you get into the world of drones?
Well, I’ve been making model airplanes since I was a kid and they’ve gotten more and more complicated and these days they virtually fly themselves. So we can fly helicopters and fixed wing airplanes. There’s an immense technical challenge involved in getting something to fly itself around the sky and then return home.
What are drones used for?
Well, they’re used for all sorts of things these days. They’re used for disaster relieve, that is areas where they’ve had earthquakes and floods. They can provide medicines and medical machinery, vaccines and emergency supplies to people in trouble and can’t be reached on the ground. They can be used in a trivial way to deliver goods to people’s houses these days, Amazons using them to deliver books and pizzas and things to people’s house in cities. Of course, they can be used to take photographs from the sky because in a disaster area you need a lot of information. You can, you can take pictures of disasters areas where there’s been an earthquake or a flood and you know what you need to send people and to help the victims of the disaster. They can also be used to provide an emergency wireless network in these areas, so if the signal towers have been taken down by floods as they were in America, they had some big floods down there, these airplanes can be used to provide a wireless network for the rescue forces and make everything go a lot more efficient.
What tips would you give a beginner?
Well, I would say do your research. Decide what you want to do with your airplane. Decide whether you want to build it yourself. Do you want to spend a few weeks at the kitchen table putting something together doing electronics soldering and screwing things together or do you want to get something that’s ready to use straight out of the box. That’s the most important question. And what do you want to do with it? Take photographs. Do you just want just to fly it around the garden? Do you want to fly it around the kitchen? These are all questions that need to be answered before you go and spend your money.
Um okay, so that’s, this is Phil for Learning English Matters. Thanks for asking me to do this. Ok, bye now.
